The fourth edition of SF(a) \u2013 Society. Film. Architecture<\/strong> took place in Ia\u0219i between 5\u201313 May 2025<\/strong>, continuing the project\u2019s mission to use science-fiction cinema as a critical tool for exploring architecture, culture, and society. Organised by the Romanian Order of Architects \u2013 Ia\u0219i<\/a> Branch, in partnership with the cultural NGO ALT+A<\/a> and a broad coalition of institutional and civic partners, SF(a)4 offered a week-long programme of screenings, workshops, lectures, and exhibitions under the theme: \u201cBlade Runner 2049 & Hypermodernism.\u201d<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Locations & Partners<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The events were hosted at ZBOR Ia\u0219i by BCR<\/strong> and the \u201cG.M. Cantacuzino\u201d Faculty of Architecture<\/strong> at the Technical University of Ia\u0219i, with activities also extending to the city through a guided tram tour and evening labs in cultural venues such as NegruZI. The project was supported by a strong network of partners including TRAMCLUB Ia\u0219i, CTP Ia\u0219i, ZEPPELIN magazine, CIVICA Association, Colegiul de Art\u0103 \u201cOctav B\u0103ncil\u0103,\u201d FABLAB Ia\u0219i, ASAI (the Association of Architecture Students in Ia\u0219i), and Atelier Spre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participants<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The edition registered an impressive 177 students and graduates<\/strong> from architecture, visual arts and design, and literature faculties<\/strong>, alongside young architects in training. They were joined by 15 volunteers<\/strong> and 4 tutors<\/strong> who guided the practical workshops. The diversity of backgrounds enriched the interdisciplinary dialogue at the heart of SF(a), fostering new perspectives on how architecture is represented, imagined, and questioned through film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Programme \u2013 Seven \u201cScenes\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The week was structured as a performative sequence of \u201cscenes,\u201d each designed to address a different stage of critical exploration:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Scene 1 <\/strong>(5 May, ZBOR Ia\u0219i by BCR):\u00a0Opening event and\u00a0case-study screening of\u00a0Blade Runner 2049<\/em>\u00a0(Denis Villeneuve, 2017)<\/strong>, setting the thematic focus on hypermodernism and dystopian imaginaries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Scene 2 <\/strong>(6 May, Faculty of Architecture):\u00a0Alternative Poster Workshop<\/strong>, with tutorials in Adobe Photoshop and ProCreate, encouraging students to reinterpret cinematic architecture visually.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Scene 3 <\/strong>(7 May, Faculty of Architecture):\u00a0Narrative & Architecture<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 lectures by\u00a0Emanuela Ilie<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Marius Revent<\/strong>, followed by the\u00a0Literary & Film Review Lab<\/strong>, where participants produced critical texts in response to the film.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Scene 4 <\/strong>(8 May, Faculty of Architecture):\u00a0Hermeneutic Deconstruction<\/strong>, with lectures and debates led by\u00a0Ramona Costea<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Andrei Cozlac<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Scene 5 <\/strong>(9 May, Faculty of Architecture):\u00a0Continuation of hermeneutic explorations, with contributions from\u00a0Silviu Teodor-Stanciu, Viola Ruhse, Anca Horvath, and Dimitrios Raptis<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Scene 6 <\/strong>(10 May, Faculty of Architecture & city):\u00a0A rich day of exchanges, featuring talks by\u00a0Dan Perjovschi, \u0218tefan Ghenciulescu, and Matei Bejenaru<\/strong>, followed by a\u00a0guided tram tour of Ia\u0219i<\/strong>\u00a0with Silviu Teodor-Stanciu and an evening experimental lab at NegruZI.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Scene 7 <\/strong>(13 May, Faculty of Architecture):\u00a0Final exhibition and awards ceremony<\/strong>, presenting the results of the workshops:\u00a054 alternative posters and 11 critical reviews<\/strong>, alongside a round-table discussion with organisers and jury members.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Guest Lecturers & Tutors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    The project gathered a distinguished roster of national and international guests, including\u00a0Dan Perjovschi <\/strong>(visual artist), \u0218tefan Ghenciulescu <\/strong>(architect & editor-in-chief, Zeppelin), Matei Bejenaru <\/strong>(artist, professor, UNAGE Ia\u0219i), Anca Horvath <\/strong>(Aalborg University, Denmark), Dimitrios Raptis (<\/strong>Aalborg University), Viola Ruhse <\/strong>(University for Continuing Education, Krems, Austria), Emanuela Ilie <\/strong>(UAIC Ia\u0219i), Radu Cucuteanu <\/strong>(historian & editor), Andrei Cozlac <\/strong>(artist & scenographer), Silviu Teodor-Stanciu <\/strong>(designer, UNAGE Ia\u0219i), and Ramona Costea <\/strong>(Faculty of Architecture, Ia\u0219i). Practical workshops were guided by\u00a0Tiberiu Teodor-Stanciu, Gabriel Tudora, Emanuela Ilie, Marius Revent<\/strong>, Cristina Tudora<\/strong>, and R\u0103zvan Mircea Nica<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Exhibition & Awards<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    The final exhibition at the Faculty of Architecture showcased the creative outcomes of the week. A professional jury evaluated the works in two sections: Alternative Posters<\/strong> and Literary & Film Reviews<\/strong>. In total, 65 works were submitted<\/strong> (54 posters and 11 reviews). Prizes, mentions, and special awards \u2013 including the ALT+A Prize \u2013 recognised excellence in critical and creative interpretation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Impact & Visibility<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    SF(a)4 attracted over 100 participants in the public lectures<\/strong> and engaged wider audiences through media coverage and social media campaigns. The event was featured on Radio HIT, TVR Ia\u0219i, and Zeppelin magazine<\/strong>, while promotional content circulated widely via partners\u2019 and guests\u2019 channels. Beyond the live events, all lectures were recorded and will be made available through a dedicated YouTube channel, ensuring the project\u2019s legacy and accessibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Core Vision<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    At its core, SF(a) Season 4 reaffirmed the project\u2019s ethos: celebrating the collective act of learning, debating, and imagining together<\/strong>. By bridging cinema and architecture, dystopia and hypermodernism, speculative futures and urban realities, SF(a) creates a unique pedagogical and cultural space that fosters both critical reflection and creative experimentation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
