The\u00a0fifth edition of SF(a) \u2013 Society. Film. Architecture\u00a0took place in Ia\u0219i between\u00a04\u201312 May 2026, continuing the project’s mission to use science-fiction cinema as a critical tool for exploring architecture, culture, and society. Initiated by the cultural NGO\u00a0ALT+A, organised in collaboration with the\u00a0Romanian Order of Architects \u2013 Ia\u0219i Branch\u00a0and the\u00a0“G.M. Cantacuzino” Faculty of Architecture\u00a0at the Technical University of Ia\u0219i, and with ASAI as a partner, SF(a)5 offered a nine-day programme of screenings, workshops, lectures, and exhibitions under the theme:\u00a0“High-Rise & Late Modernism.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The events were hosted across three venues: Zbor Hub by BCR<\/strong>, the “G.M. Cantacuzino” Faculty of Architecture<\/strong>, and NegruZI<\/strong>, with a guided tram tour extending activities into the city along the T\u00e2rgu Cucu\u2013Copou route, in partnership with TRAMCLUB Ia\u0219i.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participants<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The edition registered 162 participants<\/strong>, predominantly from architecture (130, 80%)<\/strong>, alongside 32 participants (20%)<\/strong>from other fields. Of these, 158 were undergraduate students<\/strong> and 4 were high-school pupils<\/strong>. Notably, 79 participants (49%) were returning<\/strong> from previous editions, while 83 (51%) joined SF(a) for the first time<\/strong> \u2014 a strong indicator of both sustained loyalty and continued growth in reach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Programme<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

SF(a)5 was structured around the project’s five core axes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • SF(a)Talks<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 a series of lectures bringing together voices from architecture, sociology, visual arts, literary criticism, and built heritage<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • SF(a)Labs<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 practical workshops in alternative poster design, film and literary review writing, and paper-folding techniques (origami\/kirigami) applied to architecture and design<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • SF(a)Tour<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 a guided tram tour of Ia\u0219i, tracing the T\u00e2rgu Cucu\u2013Copou route<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • SF(a)Expo<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 the final exhibition opening showcasing participants’ work<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • SF(a)Book<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 the launch of the bilingual collective volume\u00a0Beyond Dystopia. Society, Architecture, and Cinema<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    The programme opened on\u00a04 May<\/strong>\u00a0and closed on\u00a012 May<\/strong>\u00a0with the joint exhibition vernisaj and book launch.\u00a08 May<\/strong> brought together Dan and Lia Perjovschi with Gelu Duminic\u0103 for one of the edition’s key public days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Guest Lecturers & Tutors<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    The project gathered a distinguished roster of national and international guests, including Dan Perjovschi<\/strong> and Lia Perjovschi<\/strong> (visual artists, with presences at MoMA, Tate Modern, and Documenta 15), Gelu Duminic\u0103<\/strong> (sociologist, coordinator of the \u00cempreun\u0103 Agency Foundation), Dumitru Rusu<\/strong> (architect and researcher in socialist-modernist heritage, president of BACU, author of the “Socialist Modernism” guide series), M\u00e1rio Say Ming Kong<\/strong> (architect and professor, FA-ULisboa), Viola R\u00fchse<\/strong> (University for Continuing Education, Krems, Austria), Roxana Vasiliu<\/strong> (UAIC Ia\u0219i), Adrian Mironescu<\/strong> (founder, Optimism Works), Alin-Enver Hoblea<\/strong> (President, OAR Ia\u0219i), Mihai Bulai<\/strong> (UAIC Ia\u0219i), and Ioana Cec\u0103l\u0103\u0219an<\/strong> (Technical University of Cluj-Napoca).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Exhibition & Awards<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    The final exhibition showcased the creative outcomes of the edition. In total, 83 works were submitted<\/strong> (59 alternative posters<\/strong> and 24 literary\/film reviews<\/strong>). The alternative poster competition featured a Director’s Choice award<\/strong>, judged by High-Rise<\/em> director Ben Wheatley<\/strong> and screenwriter Amy Jump<\/strong>, won by student George-Teofan Sandu<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Core Vision<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    At its core, SF(a) Season 5 reaffirmed the project’s ethos: celebrating the collective act of learning, debating, and imagining together<\/strong>. By bridging cinema and architecture, dystopia and late modernism, collective housing and urban realities, SF(a) creates a unique pedagogical and cultural space that fosters both critical reflection and creative experimentation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
